Born in Melbourne, I studied with Mr Brian Blake in Burwood, becoming a finalist in the ABC’s Instrumental and Vocal Competition in 1978.
I completed a Bachelor of Music degree at the Victorian College of the Arts, as a student of Mr Henry Wenig, graduating with distinction in 1983. Having won a variety of scholarships and awards, I travelled to the USA where I completed a Master of Music (Performance) at Indiana University Bloomington, studying with Mr Gary Hoffman and Professor Janos Starker, and attending Summer Schools in Aspen, Colorado and Banff, Canada.
On my return to Melbourne, I worked casually with the MSO and the State Orchestra of Victoria before being appointed as Associate Principal Cellist with SOV in 1989 – a position which I still hold.
I have an extensive knowledge of cello technique and repertoire, classical music style, etudes, chamber music and orchestral excerpts, particularly from the opera and ballet repertoire.
I have taught advanced students as well as beginners (both children and adults) privately.
During my studies at the VCA I taught part-time, firstly at Glamorgan Prep School and later at Strathcona Baptist Girls’ Grammar.
Whilst raising my family and working full-time, teaching had to take a back seat as I was too busy, but I have recently begun teaching privately again, and I am keen to impart my love of the cello and knowledge of repertoire to the next generation of aspiring cellists.
