Hello! I’m Justin. I teach sax, clarinet and flute with a particular interest in jazz. As of writing my teaching availability is quite limited and so I am unable to accept new students at after school/work hours. I have some room to accept new students during the day on Wednesdays.
My qualifications include a Masters of Philosophy with a focus on the composition of music for swing dancers completed at ANU; and a Bachelor of Music Education with Honours and a Bachelor of Jazz Performance, both completed at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. My teaching is also informed and invigorated by my extensive performance work. I have experience in jazz, classical and contemporary styles and regularly perform in small and large jazz bands, funk bands and contemporary bands. I have been teaching saxophone and woodwind and leading ensembles for about fifteen years and have felt that what I have done has been of a high standard and well received by students, parents, teachers, and audiences. I currently teach at Trinity Christian College, Mary Mackillop College, Emmaus Christian College and Brindabella Christian College. I am the musical director of Connexion Big Band.
Since moving to Canberra I regularly perform with such groups as trad-jazz band Zackerbilks and my own swing jazz band Rhythm Capital.
Topics of study for lessons include beginner, intermediate, advanced; primary, secondary, university, and mature-age; saxophone (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone), flute (and piccolo), and clarinet (plus bass clarinet); jazz improvising, repertoire, arranging, composing and style; classical including AMEB exams and theory; contemporary styles including funk, reggae, rock, folk, etc; maintenance, buying, and gear.
