MARTA GALTSEVA
About

Captivating and highly inventive, Marta Galtseva is a contemporary pianist, arranger and composer originated from Kazan, Russia, currently situated in Melbourne, Australia.
With a Russian spirit heritage and upbringing, Marta Galtseva’s compositions are influenced by works of Tchaikovsky, Glinka, Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky. Her improvised jazz works are filled with depth, passion and sophistication that are influenced with works of Chick Corea, Art Tatum, McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans and Red Garland. Her music is melodically driven with a strong sense of character and narrative, weaving the sounds of European chanson, Middle Eastern music, Celtic ballads and old jazz standards into a striking blend of improvised modal and blues melodies with beautiful harmonic changes and interesting rhythmic ideas.
Studying at Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, leading into a VCA Contemporary Music Bachelor Course and finishing with a Masters of Music (Performance Teaching) at University of Melbourne, Marta has composed over 15 original works, including a highly acclaimed commissioned work for Janos Zoltan’s ‘Secret Matters” documentary that has been presented by VCA Film and Television in 2015. From demonstrating the outstanding results in contemporary subjects at VCA, Marta has received the Will Poskitt Piano Scholarship Award in 2014.
After graduating from Masters fo Music (Performance Teaching) course at University of Melbourne, Marta has continued working at various schools in Melbourne, developing her passion for teaching from primary to secondary level students, engaging students to learn the repertoire they enjoy. Marta’s love for musical freedom and creative approach to sound, has drawn her to contemporary music teaching methods, such as Orff and Dalcroze, to develop her own methods of teaching improvisation to primary and secondary level students, engaging them in a fun collaborative piano playing in various music styles, from free sound explorations to folk music and jazz.
From a young age, Marta has already been exposed to a local jazz scene in Kazan, meeting with an American jazz pianist and composer Cyrus Chestnut that led her to pursue jazz and migrate to Australia. At VCA, Marta has performed with leading Australian jazz musicians: David Jones (drummer) and Nilusha Dassenaike (jazz vocalist and songwriter) at VCA ensemble jazz concert in 2013. Marta has learnt from the leading Australian jazz pianists: Steve Sedergreen, Andrea Keller, Will Poskitt, Barney McAll and Joe Chindamo.
With a profound range of mentorships, Marta has worked for 13 years as a jazz performer and accompanist with a variety of contemporary singers, arranging jazz standards, as well as accompanying for opera singers and choirs. She has an experience working with professional bands for musical shows, such as ‘Decoration Day” that has been showcased at Gasworks Arts Park in 2018.
Furthermore, she has performed at prestigious jazz venues in the collective events: Dizzy’s, Bennetts Lane, Performing Arts Centre, Federation Square, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre, Trades Hall, Melbourne Museum, and Sydney and Singapore jazz venues.
