Michelle has more than 10 years of teaching experiences and has taught students at all age groups. She not only undertakes general teaching tasks, but also tries to develop students’ appreciation of music through practical skills and encourages them to expand their interests in music.
*Biography
Flutist Michelle Kim is a distinguished graduate of the Schulich School of Music of McGill University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Flute Performance and Music Theory, studying under the guidance of Montreal Symphony Principal, Timothy Hutchins. Michelle enriched her musical education further during an exchange program at Sibelius-Akatemia in Helsinki, Finland, under Professor Mikael Helasvuo. She is currently pursuing a Master of Secondary Teaching at Griffith University.
Beginning her musical journey in Seoul with piano lessons at five, Michelle’s passion for music flourished, leading her to commence flute studies at twelve. Just three years later, at the age of fifteen, she was appointed principal flutist of the London Youth Symphony. Michelle has been a member of the National Youth Band of Canada and the McGill Symphony Orchestra, and during her time in Helsinki, she performed with various ensembles including Helsinki University Orchestra, NYKY Ensemble, Academy Winds and the Academy’s Opera orchestra. With numerous prizes from the Canadian Music Competition and the Kiwanis Music Festival, Michelle has performed concertos with professional orchestras, showcasing her exceptional talent and dedication to musical excellence. She also had the opportunity to work with renowned artists such as Emmanuel Pahud, Susan Hoeppner, and Richard Lapointe at Le Domaine Forget Music Academy.
Michelle’s extensive performance experience informs her teaching approach as she shares her passion and expertise with students of all ages, nurturing the next generation of musicians. With over a decade of teaching experience, she has taught more than a hundred private students in Canada, Korea and Australia. Michelle has also lead multiple ensembles including youth orchestras and various flute choirs. She finds working as a music teacher as fascinating and enjoyable as her career as a performer. Michelle develops her students’ deep appreciation for music, fostering a lifelong love for music.
