Raphael began learning trumpet at the age of eight with Catherine Walmsley and received guidance under the baton of Peter Walmsley (OAM) in Willoughby Junior Brass Band and later in the Symphonic Wind Band at Barker College. He is currently completing a Bachelor of Music (Performance) degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, studying with Leanne Sullivan (Principal Trumpet of the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra).
In 2014 Raphael obtained his AMusA in Trumpet and won the NSW Open Flugelhorn Solo and Open Duet events. In 2015 he placed 3rd in the Australian Open Soprano Cornet Solo event and is the current NSW Open Flugelhorn Champion. In 2019 he also placed 2nd to his talented sister, Isabella, in the NSW Open B-flat Trumpet Solo event.
Raphael holds principal positions in the Sydney University Symphony Orchestra, Hills Shire Symphony Orchestra and the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra, and regularly performs with the North Shore Wind Symphony, Sydney Youth Orchestra, Pacific Brass, Willoughby Brass Band and The FilmHarmonia Orchestra. He also has extensive experience playing in pit orchestras & bands for musicals & cabarets, in big bands and jazz ensembles.
Raphael is also sought after as a trumpet and brass tutor, having taught trumpet to students aged six to adults since 2015 and regularly directing brass tutorials/workshops at schools such as Knox Grammar Preparatory, Hornsby Girls High, Pennant Hills High, Hornsby North Public and Waitara Public Schools. He teaches in all styles of music, however mainly classical, jazz & orchestral styles. He prepares students for AMEB exams from preliminary to AMusA level.
